Modifications: Flax

As I mentioned before, I modified the flax I knit for my cousin...

Since it is a free pattern there is no problem mentioning numbers, so I will explain in depth what I did...

First of all, I started the BOR at the middle of the back and not at the beginning of the sleeve...

That made easier to do the short rows on the back... I knit 4 short rows at the back and the continued knitting my piece... (if you don't know how to figure out the short rows, leave me a comment and I will count and thell you what I did).

Next part was the neckline... I made the M/L which means I cast on 90 sts.

The front piece is 42 sts...

My train of thought was... I need to make something that looks curved and I need it to be smooth...

With that in mind I divided the 42 sts by 3, 1/3 was the neck, 1/3 the one side, 1/3 the other side... Tha equals 14 sts on each occasion...

On the sides, the first stitch is the stitch for the raglan, so we have 13 sts to work...

Then I thought that if I just wrap and turn one sts at a time, I will end up with two straight diagonal lines and one horizontal line, which sounded a little bit harsh.

So, near the horizontal line I had to have smooth transitions... That means before the horizontal line I need smaller lines...

Which leads to having on each end of the horizontal line a set of three sts... Then a set of two sts (in order to keep it smooth) and then the singles...

The result is

We knit the sleeve, then knit the raglan sts then wrap and turn the next one...

Purl until you end up to the same spot on the other side, wrap and turn...

Knit up to the wrap, pick it up and knit it, wrap and turn the next sts...

Purl up to the wrap, pick it up, and purl it, wrap and turn the next sts...

Do this 6 more times...

Knit, pick up and knit the wrap, knit one, wrap and turn...

Purl, pick up and purl the wrap, purl one, wrap and turn...

Knit, pick up and knit the wrap, knit two, wrap and turn...

Purl, pick up and purl the warp, purl two, wrap and turn...

Knit, pick up the wrap, knit the remaining sts, pick up the wrap on the other side and continue knitting in the round until you have to split for the body/sleeves.

As you do the wraps and turns, you don't forget to increase for the raglan...

I hope this makes sence, but technically, what it does is to lower the front and create a crew neckline...

The other thing I did was that I knit it straight and didn't knit the garter panel...

As I said before it is a very well written pattern and  a very easy one... I would suggest it as a first sweater pattern...

  1. I was excited to see that you added short rows to the back of the Flax pattern. I would love your help so I may do the same. I am making size 8-10 for my grandson. Thanks in advance, Nancy

    1. I would be glad to help you... So, you have 33 sts for the back. To work the short rows you will:

work 27 sts and turn, work 20 sts and turn, work 15 sts and turn, work 10 sts and turn and continue working in the round. These counts will work if you have the beginning of the round at the sleeve as mentioned in the pattern... If you put the BOR in the middle of the back, get back to me and I will help you :) Happy Knitting!!!
